What is a
Director Identification Number (DIN)
DIN is a unique Director identification number allotted by the Central Government to any person intending to be a Director or an existing director of a company. It is an 8-digit unique identification number which has a lifetime validity. Through DIN, details of the directors are maintained in a database.
Whenever a return, an application or any information related to a company will be submitted under any law, the director signing such return, application or information will mention his DIN underneath his signature.
DIN is specific to a person, which means even if he is a director in 2 or more companies, he has to obtain only 1 DIN. And if he leaves a company and joins some other, the same DIN would work in the other company as well.

How to apply for DIN and relevant forms?
SPICe Form and Documents to be attached
Application for allotment of DINs to the proposed first Directors in respect of New companies shall be made in SPICe form only.

Any person intending to become a director in an already existing company shall have to make an application in eForm DIR-3 for allotment of DIN.

DIR-6 Form and Documents to be attached
Any changes in the particulars of the directors shall be filed in form DIR-6
- For changing any details mentioned in the DIR-3 form/ SPICe with respect to Directors, then Form DIR-6 has to be submitted online.
- With the form, the attested supporting document is also required to be submitted.

What is the validity of a DIN?
A DIN is valid for life once it has been issued. There is no expiry date, and it remains associated with the individual, regardless of their involvement in multiple companies. If a director ceases to be associated with any company, the DIN will remain valid unless it is canceled due to non-compliance or other issues.
Can I cancel my DIN if I no longer want to be a director?
Yes, if you no longer wish to be a director, you can request the cancellation of your DIN through the MCA portal. You need to submit an application for DIN deactivation or cancellation. However, this will only happen if you are no longer associated with any company.
